22/10 – 26/01: The last three months… I am home now. Safe, healthy, happy, hungry for more.

Posted in Uncategorized on January 26, 2010 by levinietvelt

Friends,

I am alive and I was during the last three months. I simply preferred to travel and not to report. It felt right. Nevertheless, I do want to give you a last impression, only pictures. They are from Brasil, Argentina and Chili.

I also would like to thank you for all you comments and mails. I liked them.

I am home now, safe, happy and hungry. I won’t bother you anymore. The blog ends here.

As a conclusion: Traveling has made me a traveler. More to come, I am sure.  Not sure when though. But as of now, I will test how fast I can change into another kind of live. Next Monday, I will start working again.

Brasilia, the constructed capital of Brazil. I personally liked it

The Parliament in Brasilia. Most people who live there like it, all the others "like to hate" it, as the Lonely planet sauys

Salvador de Bahia, the "classical" beach image of Brazil. Brazil is much more, at some pictures at the end show.

And after Brazil, I went back to the mountains and the wines. To Mendoza’s mountains near the Aconcagua, to Talca in Chile -FABULOUS- and to Santiago de Chile and its Maipu wine valley.

I conquered a 5400m peak with Jannick, a Walloon I met, went on my own to the Volcan Descabsado in Chile and with Else to Santiago de Chile. One tip for people who like mountains and nature, have a reasonable budget and like some luxury: Go to Chili.

Jannick and I, ready for take of

The little dwarf is Jannick... We are at around 4800m

Volcan Descabesado, Talca Chil. As said, go to Chili if you like mountains and have the budget

And finally the last mountains around Santiago de Chili with Else:

Chilenian Andes around Chili. I know, yet again mountains...

The same mountains as above but at sunset

Me and Else, ready for our hike (And still smiling and in shorts... It was much colder up there at 5000m)

And after that, it was Christmas and new year in Brazil. I did a few road trips, stayed a little longer at Else’s place. And from Brasil, I went home, where I am now. Just a few more pictures of Brazil, to show you just how different it is.

09/10 – 21/10: Bolivita, el pays que me gustaba muchissimo. A story

Posted in Uncategorized on October 29, 2009 by levinietvelt

After 4 months of travelling, things do change. As Tom a good friend of mine said to me before leaving, Belgium became blurry, the importance of what I did before became less clear to me and I got more focussed on my little life here, the travelling. Living to some extent in a bubble, meeting other travellers, reaching out. Bere did feel it from time to time, which made it not always obvious to find common ground. In the end, we did our travel and I think are both happy we visited all those places and did what we did.

May-be because I was in this little after-4-months-of-travelling-bubble that Bolivia pleased me very much, but I also think it is a great country to travel to. The people are very friendly -although the information thay give you not always reliable- I found busses remarkable safe, or at least not too dangerous. But above all, I loved the Altiplano, the high Andes plateaus.

Bolivia together with Colombia are my favourite countries, the Salar -the Salt desert in Uyuni- together with the Cordiera Blanca in Peru and Carthagena in Colombia the nicest spots on my travel. I learned to chew coca leaves in Bolivia, praised myself to be born in a good family and just enjoyed nature. We did not discuss a lot the politics of Bolivia, the reasons for its poverty, we did not focus on the outcome of the alliance it has with Chavez, in my view a dangerous populist person. That also is what is happening after 4 months of travelling. Politics lose some of its glory as the nature and scenery is just too beautiful and people just people, not voters.

The first thing we did was travelling by daylight from Peru to Bolivia, so that we could see the Altiplano and the Titicaca Lake. It is beautiful, but time constraints made us go straight to La Paz.

So we started with visiting La Paz, a great spot to do stuff around. We did not do a lot, some biking and a visit to the Valle de la Luna which is a strangly eroded landscape.

Men will always remain boys... We took many "fighting" pictures. Bere always won or thought he won...

The highlight came afterwards, a 3 day trip in the Salar de Uyuni and the Eduardo Avaroa National Park. The Salar has about 10 BILLION TONS of salt, the Natioinal Park about the same on colors -my guess. I liked it very much, sitting in the jeep for 3 days, being driven around, being fed, playing cards with the other people and just watching. Very, very, nice. Go there.

Our route

The track we did was Uyuni, Isla Pescado, Cuevas -caves-, which are in the Salar, then to Lago Hedionda and the two other small lakes, to the Arbol de Piedra -a rock eroded in the form of a tree-, Lago Colorado, the hot springs -termas-, Lago Verde and than all the way back to Uyuni. Some pictures.

Al this took us until the 15th of October. Afterwards, we went to Potosi, to the Cerro Rico, the mine which gave Spain all its colonial silver wealth. It is still mined, lived by the Bolivians as something of their culture, but man, it is hard. Incredible hard. Working around 12 hours in very primitive circumstances and at times at 40degrees C. La double is feared: working 24 hours in a row. But, the miners are self-organised and if they are lucky in find a good silver vein, they are rich. It is a lottery. With your health. We had the luxury only to stay two days.

And after that, Bert went home and I went to Sucre, the white city and spend 3 days doing nothing, went on to visit my cousin in Santa Cruz and than to Brasil. Unexpectedly, but great. I am there now, for some more time. Undefined. In Brasilia. 4 months of travelling makes me a little more relaxed.

Sucre is the white city of Bolivia. The university and constitutional court city. Relaxed but a little dull sometimes

Travelling is meeting with people. I spend 3 great days in Sucre, speaking in dutch with Doreen, from the Netherlands. They have such funny little words!

30/09 – 08/10: Cusco, the capital of the Incas

For once, just pictures of Cusco, our Salkantay trekking, the Machu Pichu, Moray, an Inca irrigation test system and Salinas de Maras.

26/09 – 29/09: About nuns, psychedelic plants, Mexicans in Arequipa and the gold of the Incas

Posted in Uncategorized on October 27, 2009 by levinietvelt

Nuns: Arequipa were we went next has the most beautifull monastery I have seen yet, Santa Catalina Convent. To some extent logic, as it has been closed for almost 400 years. Once in, never out. Better create a nice place, no?

Psychedelic plants: Arequipa is the start of the Colca trek, a very, very, very, very, very 3 day touristy trek except for the start, which is weaking up at 4 am! But, during the trek our guide explained us the use of one of the “cacti”. Local use it to encounter oneself, meditating and fasting… Tourists find it a great psychedelic drug, to the extent that some thought they could fly…

My friend Bert bought a nice sombrero and looked like a Mexican!

The gold of the Incas: We had a great guide, Pepe. Ex-rocker, but still looked like one. Learned his English from singing, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Guns and Roses… Good contacts and guided a Polish scientific team which was measuring the depth of the Colca canyon, which is the deepest in the world.

BUT

This was all appearance. One should know that the last Inca Queen died in Poland and left a secret document about a hidden secret. That was the mission of the Polish team. He did not tell us whether or not they found it…

23/09 – 24/09: Sealife in Paracas

Posted in Uncategorized on October 27, 2009 by levinietvelt

Many were the times I felt thrilled by the diversity of “Pachamama” -mother earth in Quechua- and equally sad that we as humans have not (yet?) found a way to live equal amongst our fellow life. The same feeling stuck me again in Paracas, when looking at the diversity of the sealife while being conscious I was on a oil-using boat. Shall I go a work for WWF, stop travelling, sponsor scientific research on lithium batteries and fusion or accept and move on? Has anyone found a good way forward?

In any case, penguins were my favorite.  They are sooooooooooooooooooooooooo funny and cute!

From my Footprint: "The Islands ae spectacular; eroded into numberous arches and caves which provide shelter for inquisitive sea lians, guano birds, pelicans, penguins and if you are lucky; dolphins swimming in the bay." And indeed, it was worth going there.

We did skip the Nazca lines, Ica and even Huacachina, which is a beautifull oasis where the top attraction is SANDBOARDING or snowboarding on sand… Next life, if I am not re-incarnated as a penguin!

But we did see one “Nazca” like line; were active, mountainbiking -my bike broke down though and I went back by taxi- and saw some great sceneary. Some more pictures…

20/09 – 22/09: Lima, take two

Posted in Uncategorized on October 26, 2009 by levinietvelt

Friends,

Part of the travel adventure is to wander around and sometimes err. Going to places unplanned, skipping places and also going back to places. To Lima for example. Or unplanned to Brasilia, where I am updating my blog now… And, as of now, I do not know where to go, so if you have some ideas, let me know.

(For the previous posts on Lima, see http://levinietvelt.wordpress.com/2009/06/22/1606-lima-take-one/ and http://levinietvelt.wordpress.com/2009/06/22/1706-pachacamac-when-the-spaniards-arrived-the-largest-city-and-ceremonial-centre-on-the-coast-dixit-my-footprint/ with some more pictures.)

But, after Colombia and the second time in Cali, I went back to Lima to pick up my friend Bert to travel through South Peru and Bollivia. In Lima, we chilled out, were lazy and went on a tourbus though the city. Three pics to give you an impression…

And now, I am back to Cali, the capital of Salsa and plastic surgery. Couchsurfing with Santiago, a plastic surgent who adviced me on the scar. To rest a little, to take salsa and spanish classes, to go to the world festival of Salsa. And than, back to Lima, 2nd part of my trip.

I will try to post more often, it is more fun.

Un abrazo muy fuerte a todos
